Adventist Health Debuts First Resident Matches for Graduate Medical Education Program
March 2019 (Ukiah, CA) – Friday, March 15th the Adventist Health Ukiah Valley (AHUV) Family Medicine Residency Program (FMRP) will receive the names of the first six residents to enter the program at a lunchtime Community Celebration. This long-anticipated event marks the launch of the FMRP which is focused on the full scope of rural family medicine in Mendocino and Lake County. All community members and medical staff are invited to join the celebration with a lunch hosted by AHUV March 15, 2019 at 275 Hospital Drive, Glenn Miller Conference Room beginning at noon with the six resident names being revealed at 12:30pm.
In the fall of 2016, AHUV received institutional accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to become an official teaching hospital. In 2017 AHUV, together with UC Davis, submitted the Family Medicine Residency program application to ACGME and in 2018, the ACGME accredited the AHUV Family Medicine Residency Program.
“This residency program has the power to transform our community, bringing back the glory days when primary care was thriving, and great doctors were abundant”, says Dr. Mimi Doohan, AHUV FMRP program director.
The residents will spend their first year (June 2018-July 2019) focused on hospital-based training in the Sacramento area and at UC Davis. The first year will include hospital training in adult medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, emergency medicine and critical care. AHUV FMRP residents will spend their second and third years in Mendocino and Lake Counties to complete their full scope primary care training.
AHUV FMRP received over six-hundred applications from medical students across the United States and around the world. AHUV FMRP selected forty-two applicants for interviews for our inaugural first-year residency class. The process for selecting residents involves a computerized ranking system called the Residency Match (based on a computer system which won the Nobel Prize!). On March 15 we will receive our Match list with the first cohort of six residents who will begin their three-year training program in July. AHUV FMRP will accept six new residents each subsequent year, and graduate six board-certified family doctors every year starting in 2022.
