Men's Health Month: Over 30? Time for a physical
Over 30? Health screenings need to be part of your routine
If you can’t remember the last time you visited a healthcare provider, it’s time. Get a baseline physical between ages 30 – 35. Lab work will check your cholesterol, blood sugars and other data. “By age 50, men should have a colorectal cancer screening,” says Dr. Eric Klein, a urologist at Adventist Health Tillamook. “Men over 50 should check in with their providers at least once a year.”
Screenings just for men
Men should start self-exams of the testicles as teenagers. Men in their 40s and older should get a prostate cancer screening. “If you have a family history of prostate cancer, you may need to get tested at a younger age,” Dr. Klein says.
Common issues for aging men
As they age, men often develop issues urinating. This is usually caused by enlarged prostate glands. Men in this age group may also have erectile dysfunction. “Both conditions have a variety of treatment options,” Dr. Klein says. “See your provider to find out ways to improve your quality of your life.” Also, Dr. Klein notes that men in middle age may consider vasectomy. “If you’re wondering whether this is a good choice for you and your family, let’s talk about it."
