Portland-area high school students can apply for the spring session of Adventist Health Portland’s Student Healthcare Leaders. This free, innovative program gives students a chance to explore many areas of a health care career.

The after-school program uses interactive explorations and panel discussions to help young people experience the world of health care and engage with health care professionals. In addition to learning about clinical areas, students learn about careers in administration, information technology, human resources, food services and more.

Each week, different department representatives discuss what their team does and how it fits into the work of the greater work of the medical center. Students can ask questions and learn through interactive exercises in that department.

Student Healthcare Leaders also gives students networking opportunities for years to come. Graduating classes hold alumni events, and many students stay in touch with the mentors they meet through the classes. Some are now working at Adventist Health Portland.

“We’ve had 158 students from 30 area high schools participate in this program since it launched in 2018,” says Dr. Terry Johnsson, Adventist Health Portland mission integration executive and Student Healthcare Leaders founder. “It’s incredible to think that some of our graduates may already be working in the field of health care.”

Applications are due March 22 for spring session, which meets on Wednesday evenings from April 19 to June 21. Students accepted into the program receive a full scholarship that covers the program, uniforms, supplies and a meal each week.
