Sleep Medicine
Clearlake treatment for sleep disorders
Many people struggling to get a restful night’s sleep are unaware a serious health problem may be keeping them up. Sleep apnea and other sleep and wakefulness disorders affect more than 50 million American adults. Our sleep medicine program is here to help you sleep soundly again.
Sleep and wakefulness disorders
Sleep disorders are more common — and more dangerous — than people realize. The most common is obstructive sleep apnea. Other common disorders include restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, sleepwalking and insomnia.
Health consequences
Sleep disorders often go undiagnosed because they are difficult to diagnose during a traditional visit with a provider. If untreated, sleep disorders can have major consequences to your health, including:
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- Type 2 diabetes
- Weight gain
- Stroke
- Accidents
Signs and symptoms
If you are tired of being tired — or keeping your loved ones from getting a good night’s sleep — you may want to talk to your doctor about a possible sleep disorder. Symptoms include:
- Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
- Loud snoring
- Pausing breathing while you sleep
- Morning headaches
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Memory or learning problems and not being able to concentrate
- Feeling irritable, depressed or having mood swings or personality changes
- Waking up frequently to urinate
- Dry mouth or sore throat when you wake up
Treatment
Because rest is one of the most important parts of a healthy lifestyle, treating a sleep disorder can drastically improve your quality of life and allow you to wake up with the energy you need to take on your day.
Your provider will review the results of the sleep study with a sleep specialist to find the right treatment plan for you. This could include changes in diet and exercise, education on sleep hygiene or a breathing machine like a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device.
