Bone Health
Clearlake osteoporosis treatment
Osteoporosis is a common bone condition that affects both men and women. However, women who are past menopause are at highest risk for the condition. With osteoporosis, new bone creation doesn’t keep up with old bone removal, causing bones to become weak and brittle.
If you are diagnosed with osteoporosis, your provider will work with you to create a treatment plan. That plan will likely include medications, a healthy diet, and exercises to strengthen your bones and prevent further bone loss.
Because the functions of bone are numerous and complex, there are many other disorders that require clinical care by a physician or other healthcare professional. These conditions include benign (noncancerous) disorders, cancers that occur in bone and cancers that affect bone.
Bone density screening
Adventist Health Clear Lake’s medical imaging services include dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning. DXA scans measure bone density and detect risk for broken bones. DXA is most often used to diagnose osteoporosis and is also used to track the effects of other conditions that may cause bone loss.
We have a central DXA device to measure your bone density in your hip and spine. The scan uses a large, padded table with an X-ray arm suspended overhead. The X-ray arm moves slowly to capture and then compute bone mineral density. This quick and painless outpatient procedure lets radiologists determine changes in your bone density, which they will report to your provider for any necessary follow-up treatment.
