  • COVID-19 patient welcomes care through Adventist Health Hospital@Home

When Terri Miller took a COVID-19 test in order to travel to Maui, she got the surprise of her life. She tested positive, despite having no symptoms.

Convinced the result must be a false positive, she took another test. It too said she was positive.

Terri was unvaccinated, as was her husband, David. “David and I had chosen not to get vaccinated, for a variety of different reasons,” she explains.

Soon, the disease symptoms showed up: chills, fever, cough and body aches. Six days after her positive test, Terri was sick enough to have a telemedicine visit with a doctor. The doctor prescribed steroids, antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs and antivirals. The treatment provided relief, and in two days she felt much better.

But the relief was short-lived. Struggling to breathe two days later, Terri went to the emergency room and was admitted to the hospital at Adventist Health Portland. “It’s a very isolated place to be in the hospital with COVID,” Terri says. Though she appreciated the “phenomenal” care she received, she found it difficult to be alone in a small hospital room, especially when she felt ill and afraid.

To Terri’s relief, the hospital had another option: Adventist Health Hospital@Home. Through this program, she could benefit from the latest hospital technology and real-time monitoring from the comfort of home. Adventist Health offers the service in the Portland area and in five California communities, working with partner Medically Home, which supports home-based hospital care across the United States.

Terri’s Adventist Health team set up a temporary virtual hospital unit for her, and two providers visited her every day to do blood draws and take X-rays. She had meals delivered, and a telemedicine provider was available on demand.

Terri said she enjoyed having more space and having her husband with her.

“I am thankful that I ended up in the Adventist Health system,” Terri says. “They are on the forefront of medical awareness for COVID, and there are not enough exclamation points for me to express the caring compassionate educational supportive team that is building this program.”

Terri spent about two weeks in the program supported by oxygen therapy as her lungs healed. She continues to pray that no new symptoms appear and that she recovers completely.

Given a second chance, Terri says she would do some things differently. “In reality, I probably would have chanced taking a vaccination, as I am now aware that the variants are going to continue to spread in the hosts that are not vaccinated,” she says. “And I would have entered the hospital earlier.”

For today, it’s enough to watch the progression of her lung capacity and hope the effects of COVID-19 are temporary. Her advice to others is simple: “Be safe. Be well.”

  • Patient: Ken Heard

“I tell Dr. Nedopil he’s a miracle worker.

    Orthopedic Surgeon: Dr. Alexander Nedopil
    Procedure: Hip Replacement
By the fall of 2019, Ken Heard was desperate. The pain in his right hip was so bad that he couldn’t even straighten up. He was sleeping a couple hours each night by sitting in his wheelchair and resting his head on the kitchen counter. It was a long drop from just months earlier, when Ken was enjoying an active retirement, and even further from the days when he played competitive volleyball. “There were nights I didn’t want to be here,” Ken says. “That’s how bad the pain was.” Then he met Dr. Alexander Nedopil, who discovered that Ken’s right hip socket had completely disintegrated. He was scheduled for hip replacement surgery right away. Ken was encouraged by Dr. Nedopil’s quick response and by his demeanor. “He’s one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet,” Ken says. “He’s so down to earth that you can’t help but like him.” Immediately after surgery, Ken was no longer doubled over, and the pain in his hip was gone. “I could stand up straight again,” he says, “and within two hours, I was walking with a walker.” It has been full speed ahead since then — with a brief pause 5-1/2 months later for Dr. Nedopil to replace Ken’s left hip. “Now I can do just about anything I want to do!” he says.”

  • Patient: Jason Kimmel

“Today, I have no more pain in my hip. I can walk perfectly. It’s like a distant nightmare.

    Orthopedic Surgeon: Dr. Alexander Nedopil
    Procedure: Hip Replacement

As a former All-American in college football, Jason Kimmel is no stranger to joint pain. Then came the day he literally leapt to his father-in-law’s aid when he was about to fall. Jason fell first — and that was the beginning of a downward slide into excruciating hip pain. “I had never felt that kind of pain before,” he says. It became so bad that Jason finally drove himself to Adventist Health Lodi Memorial. At that point, he couldn’t walk, so he dragged himself across the parking lot and into the Emergency Room. The ER physician introduced Jason to Dr. Alexander Nedopil, who scheduled him right away for hip replacement surgery. From the beginning, Jason was impressed by Dr. Nedopil’s expertise and approach to patient care. “He was very confident that he could help me,” Jason says, “and he wasn’t afraid to take all my questions. I could tell he genuinely cares about his patients.” Jason’s surgery and recovery went beautifully, and today he’s back to his active lifestyle. He’s biking and working out, and he and his wife are once again enjoying trips to their favorite vacation spot in Mexico. Another happy ending — thanks to the expertise and talent of Dr. Nedopil!

We travelled together one bright morning last week and had a great time listening to music, talking, laughing, sipping great coffee, planning future adventures. “Over the past months there have been varying obstacles with our systems, whether in Roseville command or remote. More recently my computer decided to not cooperate and could no longer be fixed. It was determined I needed a new computer. As fate would have it, they had just finished a build for someone that did not require it until the next day. I was able to pick up this computer. This disaster and recovery happened at the peak of our workload and I was able to complete my tasks on time because of their quick thinking. From issues with Hardware to assisting with projects and report issues that we faced, this team did not skip a beat. Through all the storms, trials, and circumstances, no matter what part of the "IT" department needed to step in, they all showed the same consideration and were sensitive to the needs of their customer. They have allowed us to do what we do best because they did their best to help us out. I would name each one, but looking at my teams page, there are so many, so.....Thank you IT/Reporting Departments - You are AWESOME!! Have A Blessed Day!! :-) -Yolanda T”

Thank you all for all you do. Thank you for risking your lives to save us and protect us. Ignore all those who, in their ignorance, have listened to bad advice and refuse to cooperate with public health recommendations. Most of us are cooperating and are very grateful to you all. • Above and Beyond

I want to show gratitude and give thanks to a special nurse, Connie Colorado at Dr. Laviolas office in Lodi, CA, who has changed my life by simply being such a kind person who truly cares about her patients. A nurse can make the difference between just “getting better” and truly healing. They are an essential emotional support system. She simply uttered the empowering words, “You're stronger than you think you are." Connie's encouragement gave me the strength I needed to lead me to a better way of life. Connie is a perfect example of Living God's Love!! She is a guardian angel ! The impact she has had on my life since my visit to the doctor office has been life changing!!

I wanted to give a big thank you to the doctors and nurses in the family birth place who made our experience so wonderful (considering). They were so kind and caring and made me feel like I wasn’t a bother whenever I asked for something. They made me smile and got to know me and my family (even our daughter who couldn’t be there). Overall, thank you for making it memorable for the right reasons, and not just because of the pandemic we are in.”

  • The ultimate gift from Simi Valley ICU/CCU

“I have a different perspective of medical workers this year. I have always appreciated the work they do, been through lots of scenarios where family have been taken care of by them, and released home to go back to the silliness of life. But this year, I am thankful for them in a different way. This year I appreciate like no other, the grace and kindness with which they helped my father make his transition to heaven. These nurses, who didn't know him at all, spent time with him in his room, held his hand, and prayed with him. They talked to him like he was their family, and worked on his body, trying to help him win the fight when his body was fighting them. They were so extremely patient with his family who could not be with him and they made a lonely situation better for him. So today I thank all the staff of Adventist Health Simi Valley, and all medical staff who have to do the hardest thing there is, which is to help a patient die with grace and dignity and staying by their side so they know they are not alone. That is a kindness we will never be able to re-pay ... but thank you to all of the staff that have to do it each and every day. You are the angels of this world.”

  • Adventist Health Bakersfield after hours administrators in ER

“Every time I have gone after hours during the week to the ER I have always been greeted and discharged by the same 3-4 girls at night, even though they are obviously doing way more work than the few of them can handle, I have never waited for any one of them, they are always quick to drop what they are doing and help me or acknowledge me. Which is so important in customer service. I have come during different times of the day and I prefer to come later at night. Even the nurses seem happier at this time. Thank you girls and nurse at night! You guys are appreciated more than you know.”
