Breast Reconstruction
One of the goals of our Breast Cancer Program care team is to help you feel more comfortable with how you look after breast cancer surgery.
Breast reconstruction is a restorative surgery for women who have had all or part of a breast removed. Typically performed by a plastic surgeon, the procedure rebuilds the breast and restores the breast shape. Most women who have had a mastectomy are eligible for breast reconstruction.
Choosing the Right Surgery
The type of breast reconstruction surgery a woman will have depends on a number of factors, including overall health, the stage of cancer, body shape and anatomy, whether or not radiation treatment is needed, treatment goals and personal preferences.
It is also important to note that the timing of breast reconstruction is different for everyone. Some reconstructions can be performed immediately after mastectomy, while some will need to be delayed due to ongoing treatment. Your breast cancer care team will help you choose the surgery that will work best with your treatment goals.
Adventist Health Glendale offers several types of breast reconstruction including implant-based and flap surgery, or a combination of both.
Implant-Based Breast Reconstruction
In implant-based breast reconstruction, the breast tissue is reconstructed using an artificial implant. The surgery is typically less extensive than other types of breast reconstruction, resulting in a shorter recovery time and fewer complications.
Flap Surgery
In flap surgery, the breast is constructed using tissues and fat from the patient's own body, typically from the abdomen or buttocks. While the surgery is often more extensive than implant-based surgery, it can result in a breast that looks and feels more natural.
