Symptoms of Heart Disease
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, for both men and women. It encompasses many different types of heart problems, including coronary artery disease (clogged arteries), heart attack, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats), atrial fibrillation and more.
The most common symptom of heart disease is chest pain, also called angina. It is described as a feeling of discomfort, heaviness, pressure, burning, aching, fullness or squeezing in your chest. Pain can also sometimes be felt in the neck, throat, shoulders, arms, jaw or back.
Because angina is often mistaken for indigestion or heartburn, it is important to get medical attention if your symptoms persist, you develop new symptoms or they become more frequent or severe.
Other symptoms of heart disease include:
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Heart palpitations (feeling as though your heart skips a beat, flutters or “flip-flops”)
- Nausea
- Pain in your back, neck or jaw
- Rapid heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Stomach pain
- Sweating
- Weakness
If you or someone near you experiences any of these symptoms with chest pain, call 9-1-1 immediately.
