Immunotherapy
The oncology specialists at Adventist Health and Rideout may recommend immunotherapy as part of your individualized care plan.
Immunotherapy boosts your immune system to fight the cancer. We use the latest advancements and tailor your treatment precisely so you can achieve the best possible outcome.
How immunotherapy works
Immunotherapy delivers treatment targeted to the cancer site, precisely tailored for you. This treatment boosts your body's immune system to fight cancer. Immunotherapy, also called biologic therapy, may work in a few ways:
- Kills cancer cells or slows their growth
- Stops cancer from spreading
- Improves your natural defenses to destroy cancer cells
There are many types of immunotherapy. Your care team will recommend the best drugs and dosages for your specific needs. You may receive immunotherapy through one or more of these methods:
- Intravenous (IV) infusion: The drugs go directly into a vein in your arm or chest.
- Oral: You swallow pills or capsules containing the drugs.
Our oncology nurse nurses streamline and explains your treatment journey, so you understand what to expect at every step. We care for hundreds of people with cancer each year, bringing you a high level of expertise.
Here’s what you can expect:
- Treatment regimen: Your doctor will recommend a regular treatment schedule.
- Comfortable facilities: You’ll receive IV immunotherapy infusions at our convenient outpatient location in Marysville, which offer a comfortable setting for your appointments.
- Caring team: Our friendly, compassionate care team makes you feel at home during treatment.
Help for immunotherapy side effects
Immunotherapy can be effective in fighting cancer, but it does have physical and emotional side effects. You might experience:
- Flu-likesymptoms, such as fatigue, fever, chills, weakness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and aches
- High or low blood pressure
- Skin reactions or other symptoms, depending on what part of your body is receiving treatment
We may recommend immunotherapy along with other cancer treatments to help you get the best outcome. Your care plan may also include chemotherapy, radiation therapy or surgery.
