Cardiopulmonary
Treatment for heart and lung disorders
Cardiopulmonary diseases are conditions that affect the heart and lungs. Cardiovascular disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the two most common cardiopulmonary diseases. The heart and lungs need each other to work properly, which is why the cardiopulmonary department at Adventist Health focuses on treating both.
Our cardiopulmonary services offers an array of inpatient and outpatient programs as well as state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment that allows the physician to determine any abnormalities in heart or lung function.
Our programs and treatments include:
- Electrocardiograms
- Treadmill testing
- Echocardiograms
- Transesophageal echocardiograms
- Asthma assessment and education
- Pulmonary function testing
- Holter monitoring
- Electroencephalograms
- 24-hour emergency care from respiratory therapists
Symptoms and treatment of cardiopulmonary disease
Cardiopulmonary diseases do not always have noticeable symptoms, but when they do they usually manifest as physical discomfort. Shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, sweating and nausea could all be signs of a cardiopulmonary disease. You should schedule an appointment with a doctor if these symptoms do not go away after a few days or become a recurring problem.
Doctors often use echocardiograms and Holter monitors to diagnose cardiopulmonary diseases. Once they learn more about the disease and how it is affecting you, they can begin a treatment plan to address the most urgent symptoms.
Treating cardiopulmonary disease often requires diet and exercise changes. Surgery may be required in severe cases when a disease poses a more immediate risk to your health. Many patients with cardiopulmonary disease will be referred to a rehabilitation program.
