Laparoscopic Surgery
At Adventist Health, you have access to exceptional surgical care with less downtime. Our general surgeons excel in using laparoscopic surgery to treat a broad range of conditions.
This method uses tiny incisions and sophisticated technology. It enables us to deliver the same high-quality care we’re known for with shorter recovery times.
Experts in laparoscopic surgery
When you have laparoscopic surgery at Adventist Health, you receive care from experienced general surgeons with a history of good results and the highest care standards. Some experts use single-incision laparoscopic surgery, which requires only one incision. The incision is often within the belly button, so the scar is barely noticeable.
Your care team also includes office and hospital staff who focus on giving you an excellent experience. We recognize that you may be nervous about having surgery and we make it easier. The team works together to coordinate services and support, so you can focus on the next steps in your care.
How laparoscopic surgery works
With traditional laparoscopic surgery:
- Surgeons make small incisions in your abdomen.
- They pass narrow tubes with instruments at the tip through the incisions to reach the surgical area.
- One of the tubes has a tiny camera that provides real-time, high-definition views on a large screen.
- Surgeons use carbon dioxide gas to inflate the abdomen, giving them the space necessary to carry out the procedure.
Single-incision laparoscopic surgery is slightly different. It involves:
- Making one incision.
- Passing one tube through the incision with the camera and instruments necessary to carry out the procedure.
Benefits of laparoscopic surgery
There are many benefits, including:
- Small incisions: Surgeons make incisions that are only a few centimeters wide, compared to several inches with open surgery. This leads to less discomfort after your procedure and tiny scars.
- Short hospital stay: You can expect to be awake, alert and on your feet within hours of waking up from surgery. Many patients go home the same day. Find out more about same-day surgery and early discharge.
- Quick return to daily activities: Patients often feel well enough to return to work within a few days. And because prescription pain medications are often unnecessary, it’s safe to start driving again earlier in your recovery.
