Areas for Volunteer Services
Volunteers may choose areas based on their interests, past experience and current openings, providing mutually satisfying experience for the volunteer and department. Strict confidentiality standards are in place at all times.
Admitting Reception
Friendly volunteers greet all who enter the hospital. They promote orderly, confidential assistance to the Patient Associates in the Admitting Office. Partnering with the Information Desk Volunteers, they generally stand (tethered) throughout their shift.
Diagnostic Imaging
At Sonora Regional Imaging Center (Covey Circle) off the main campus, volunteers welcome patients in the Mammography Center, stock the dressing rooms, and assist with questionnaires.
Emergency Department Ambassadors
Duties include stocking, tidying rooms between patients, supporting families, and errands for the department. Be prepared to stand for most of the time.
The Gift Shop
The Gift Shop is operated as a service for visitors, patients, and employees. Retail experience and use of a cash register are a plus here where flowers, plants, and gift items are sold. Profits from The Gift Shop are our main fundraiser.
Information Desk
Volunteers answer questions, the telephone, and escort patients and visitors to departments throughout the hospital. They deliver patient mail, flowers, and the daily newspapers. They are more mobile that the Admitting volunteers they partner with.
Long Term Care and Transitional Care
Volunteers assist the Activities Directors at Units 4, 6, & 7 located on the West Campus off Stockton Road. They may help with activities, clerical work, read to residents, water plants, sing, or play the piano.
Office Assistants (Clerical)
Volunteers distribute literature, stock cabinets, and assist in offices – Marketing, Human Resources, Sonora Oxygen, etc. Clerical or computer experience is helpful.
Shuttle Service Driver
Volunteers drive a 6‐passenger golf cart to assist patients, employees, and visitors to their vehicle or hospital entrances and offer a warm greeting and cordial conversation.
Patient Advocate
A friendly visitor program, compassionate volunteers interview all in‐patients to listen to their compliments or complaints regarding their stay. Patient concerns are passed on to the appropriate department for review.
Surgery Reception at SRMC
Volunteers greet patients and direct them to admitting clerks. They are liaisons between family and surgery staff. They escort pre‐op patients to areas for testing or waiting relatives to visit patient as permitted by department nurses.
Professional Building Greeter
Volunteers greet and direct patients and visitors who are lost on their first visit to a new physician.
