Adventist Health White Memorial serves the Boyle Heights community of East
Los Angeles. We work in the heart of a bustling multicultural neighborhood
that is also a federally designated medically underserved area. Residents
quickly connect with our overall mission — to bring health, healing
and hope to the community in a spirit of compassion and cultural humility.
Our Internal Medicine Residency Program aims to provide an environment
where residents learn hands-on, collaborate with multiple specialists,
participate in scholarly activity and connect with the community where
they serve.
Why Choose Our Internal Medicine Residency?
The Internal Medicine Residency offers the perfect blend of academic learning
within a community hospital-based training. Residents benefit from:
Specialized rotation opportunities: Residents in the Internal Medicine Program have unique training opportunities
with dedicated rotations ranging from in-patient to out-patient experiences
spanning Critical Care; Cardiology; Nephrology; Endocrinology; Gastroenterology;
Hematology & Oncology; Geriatrics; to a two-week course overview of
healthcare economics. Our ICU/Intensivist Rotation is one of our most
popular rotations, where residents receive hands-on opportunities to help
stabilize and manage the sickest patients in the hospital. We also have
recently launched our Nocturnist Program, where residents work together
with a nocturnist to manage sick and unstable patients during the night
shift. As such, residents receive direct supervision at all hours, even
overnight.
Collaboration with multiple specialty areas: From day one, residents work with subspecialists in multiple disciplines.
You will have opportunities to work under the guidance of our experienced
hospitalists, nocturnists, intensivists, and in dedicated inpatient and
outpatient facilities. Adventist Health White Memorial is one of 12 Certified
Primary Stroke Centers in Los Angeles County and the only one covering
downtown and East Los Angeles. We are a county-designated receiving center
for patients with heart attacks. Residents have hands-on learning opportunities in our
Stroke Center with our highly skilled neurologist.
Comprehensive, hands-on experience: Our aim is to provide an appropriate balance between hands-on experience
and academic learning. Residents providing ongoing care for their own
panel of patients throughout their training. They also have access to the
Lyman A. Brewer III MD Simulation Center, where they can practice suturing, lumbar puncture simulations, mock code
blues and more in a low-risk environment.
Support for resident well-being: We want residents to work hard and succeed — but we also understand
that they need rest, too. We strictly adhere to the Accreditation Council
for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) guidelines and each resident receives
a full day off every seven days. Residents have access to
well-being resources such as counseling services and complimentary access to our workout facility.
We also regularly ask all residents to provide feedback so that we can
continue to improve the resident experience and foster a culture of joint
decision-making.
Strong culture of connectedness: The fact that all of our core faculty are graduates of this residency
program speaks to the strength of our program’s culture. All of
us know what it’s like to be a resident here. We foster a consistent
culture of community that doesn’t get recreated with each new cohort.
Through wellness retreats, outings and house staff communication meetings,
residents find deep ties of connection and community with each other.
