Adventist Health White Memorial’s Podiatry Residency provides residents
with a comprehensive experience in podiatric medicine. We offer extensive
hands-on learning opportunities, including in podiatric and orthopedic
surgery and even through an elective Intensive Care Unit (ICU) rotation.
When residents come to our program, they can expect to graduate with the
necessary skills to lead their own clinical practice.
Located in the East Los Angeles community of Boyle Heights, our residency
programs provide care for a federally designated medically underserved
community. Residents and faculty alike bond through the mission to provide
health and hope to the community in a spirit of compassion and cultural humility.
Why Choose Our Podiatry Residency?
Adventist Health White Memorial is an inner-city teaching and community
hospital with a rich heritage of postgraduate education. When residents
choose our program, they benefit from:
Extensive surgical experience: Our Podiatry Residency is designed to prepare residents to lead in their
own clinical practice. To that end, our residents hit their surgery case
volumes early on in the program. By graduation, residents will have completed
over 1,000 surgical first-assists. We work with more than 25 orthopedic
and podiatric surgeons and residents have extensive exposure to inpatient
management. Through our partnership with
Keck Medicine of University of Southern California (USC), residents rotate through Plastic Surgery, Limb Preservation and Orthopedics
Departments.
Access to the latest technology: Residents have 24/7 access to the
Lyman A. Brewer III MD Simulation Center, where they can practice their clinical skills in a low-risk setting.
The Simulation Center uses the most innovative technology for residents
to practice wound assessments, mobility simulations and surgical techniques.
Our medical directors collaborate directly with the Simulation Center
to ensure that residents can practice any board-related simulation they
might need.
Care for a diverse patient population: Historically, our community has been one of the highest-volume areas in
the country for below-the-knee amputations. In response, our program leaders
have established both inpatient and outpatient programs that have helped
to reduce the rate of amputations in our patients.
Community connection: Our Residency Program is a direct connection to our community. Residents
participate in community health screenings, practice in outpatient clinics
and have clinical learning opportunities in inpatient management. Because our
community is a federally designated medically underserved area, residents bond over
the mission to bring health and hope with a spirit of compassion and humility.
Emphasis on resident well-being: The Podiatry Residency is filled with young professionals who want to
make a difference in their community. We have a service-oriented, highly
engaged cohort who build strong relationships with patients, faculty and
each other. Residents also have access to a range of resources to support their
well-being, such as counseling services, wellness retreats and complimentary membership
to our fitness center.
