Understand your risk of developing diabetes
Certain people are more at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes than others. Lifestyle habits, genetics and other factors play a part in your likelihood of developing diabetes.
The following are risk factors that increase your chances of developing Type 2 diabetes:
- Age (persons 45 or older are at a higher risk)
- Being overweight
- Being sedentary
- Having a family history of diabetes
- Having high cholesterol
- Having high blood pressure
- Certain racial and ethnic groups (including non-Hispanic blacks, Hispanic/Latino Americans, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, American Indians and Alaska Natives)
- Women who had gestational diabetes or who have had a baby weighing 9 pounds or more at birth
