Adventist Health White Memorial’s vascular screening program
Beyond diagnosis and surgery, the Heart and Vascular Care Center at Adventist Health White Memorial performs free vascular screenings in the community through health fairs, screening events, partnerships and more. Through these efforts, the Heart and Vascular Care Center is helping to shape a healthier future for our neighborhood.
Who should be screened for vascular disease
Screenings are useful in certain high-risk groups in the elderly population. Anyone over the age of 55 has a higher risk of atherosclerosis and therefore a greater chance of developing vascular disease.
Other well-known risk factors include:
- Diabetes
- High blood pressure
- Smoking
- High blood cholesterol
- Family history of atherosclerotic problems and circulatory problems
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening
This screening is done on the stomach area. For peripheral vascular disease, a different screening is used. During this fast, painless test, blood pressure cuffs are placed on the arms and ankles to measure the pressure of blood flow to the arms and legs.
Carotid scan
This scan consists of a quick carotid duplex ultrasound scan and a blood pressure check for severe hypertension. The ultrasound is done on the neck. These exams can detect the most frequent causes of stroke and significant internal carotid artery stenosis.
