Adventist Health Sonora Earns Spring 2023 “A” Hospital Safety Grade

News, Awards & Recognition

We are proud to share that Adventist Health Sonora has earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade for Spring 2023 from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit upholding the standard of patient safety in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.

This national distinction recognizes hospitals that prioritize patient safety by protecting patients from preventable harm and errors. The Spring 2023 grades reflect performance primarily during the height of the pandemic.

“I am incredibly proud of our team for achieving this recognition for the first time in Adventist Health Sonora’s history,” said Michelle Fuentes, President of Adventist Health Sonora. “This is more than just a letter grade to us. It represents our deep commitment to providing the best possible care for our community.”

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“This new update of Hospital Safety Grades shows that, at the national level, we saw deterioration in patient safety with the pandemic,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “But this hospital received an ‘A’ despite those challenges. I congratulate all the leaders, staff, volunteers and clinicians who together made that possible.”

Our “A” grade from The Leapfrog Group comes on the heels of other recent recognitions, including being named a Top 100 Rural and Community Hospital by the Chartis Center for Rural Health and earning the Healthgrades 2022 Patient Safety Excellence Award. President Michelle Fuentes was also recently recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review in a list of Community Hospital CEOs to Know for improving quality outcomes, patient experience and employee engagement while expanding access to care.
