What is tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound in your head or ears that does not have an outside source. Tinnitus can be a ringing, buzzing, rushing or other sounds.

What is the tinnitus management program?

The Adventist Health Portland tinnitus management program helps people manage their tinnitus and get some relief from its impact on their lives. The program includes a hearing evaluation, a tinnitus consultation, five weeks of group treatment and therapy sessions, and several follow-up assessments.

How do I get into the tinnitus management program?

You’ll begin with a clinical hearing evaluation to rule out any kind of hearing loss that could be affecting your tinnitus. A clinical hearing evaluation by an audiologist within the last two years will also count. Hearing screenings or tests not performed by a clinical audiologist are not comprehensive enough to qualify.

After you’ve had the required hearing evaluation, you can schedule your 60-minute tinnitus consultation with Dr. Nancy Bowen-Hicks, Certificate Holder – Tinnitus Management.

What does the consultation consist of?

Your consultation will be a one-hour appointment with a doctor of audiology to discuss your history with tinnitus, what may have caused it, and what techniques or therapies you’ve already tried. We’ll have you answer a questionnaire to get additional information about how your condition is affecting you.

We will also discuss any additional specialties your regular provider has referred you to or you may need, such as physical therapy, dentistry or ENT provider.

When is the program held?

Initial consultations can be scheduled anytime. The tinnitus management program is a five-week commitment. Classes are weekly at the main Adventist Health campus in southeast Portland.

Can I join the classes at any time?

You need to start with the first class and attend each class in sequence to be successful.

What does the five-week class program consist of?

You will spend five weeks with a team of experts in a group setting, with three to six other patients who are also dealing with tinnitus. The classes are run by a team of experts in audiology and behavioral health.

Does my insurance cover the tinnitus management program?

Your initial hearing evaluation can be billed to your medical insurance, so your cost will vary based on your benefits.

Your individual one-hour consultation is not typically covered by insurance.

Your path to relief starts at Adventist Health Portland.
